New Phrase: たっきゅう（卓球）
Meaning and Thoughts: I was walking with a Japanese friend and came across an academy that taught ping pong (the meaning of this word!) and was reminded about how someone I talked to was surprised that Japanese people have a native word for baseball (やきゅう）and I talked to the person I was with, who talked about how there are tons of native words for sports... but most of them are just not popular, and some might be rarely used (besides maybe the ones for baseball and maybe ping pong etc) outside of sports club team names and stuff, for example しゅうきゅう for soccer (easy to remember, syuu, or uhm shoe, used to kick a ball haha different kanji) or maybe the really rare one がいきゅう for American football. In addition, すいきゅう for water polo (which makes total sense if you know your way around Japanese words) and tenis as ていきゅう and finally どうきゅう for billiards .. oh why stop when we can also through in ろうきゅう which is basketball? ..... and since we are on the topic of ～きゅう how about ねつききゅう meaning hot air ballon? with the really easy to read kanji of 熱気球 which makes kind of twisted since. The ～きゅう chain of words is really long, with even simple words you probably know like ちきゅう (Earth, or literally dirt ball) and the related はんきゅう (hemisphere) ....so I guess its good to know this humble word maker!
